The last week of February, our family traveled to Jamaica to serve at the Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf (CCCD). It was a week that changed us in ways we are still processing.
The Ministry
The Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf has been serving the deaf community in Jamaica for over 50 years. They operate a school, a church, and a vocational training center — all in sign language. Their mission is to bring the Gospel to the deaf community, which is often one of the most unreached people groups in any country.
What We Did
Our family spent the week working alongside the staff and students at CCCD. We helped with construction projects, spent time in classrooms, and participated in their Sunday worship service — one of the most moving worship experiences of our lives.
Watching a congregation worship God entirely in sign language is something I will never forget. The beauty, the expressiveness, the joy — it was worship in its purest form.
What We Learned
We went to Jamaica thinking we were going to serve. We came home having been served.
The students at CCCD — many of whom face significant challenges in a hearing world — radiated a joy and a faith that put ours to shame. They reminded us that the Kingdom of God is not limited by language, ability, or circumstance.
Why Missions Matter
I write music and books about faith. But there is no substitute for going. For showing up. For sitting across from someone whose life looks nothing like yours and discovering that you share the same Father.
If you have the opportunity to serve on a mission trip — go. Take your family. It will be worth it.
